Canada’s retirement system is failing the people it was built to serve. The combined maximum CPP and OAS payment leaves the average Canadian retiree with a net pension replacement rate of just 45% of their working income — among the lowest in the developed world and well below the OECD average of 63%. In Austria, long-term contributors receive 87% of their average lifetime net income in retirement. In the Netherlands, 96%. Canada is not a poor country. There is no excuse for this.

Canada’s public education system serves millions of children well, and the Common Good Party is committed to its strength and continued public investment. But we also recognise a truth that many parents know from lived experience: some children learn differently, thrive in different environments, and are best served by pedagogical approaches that the standard public school system does not offer.

The federal government made the National School Food Program permanent through the National School Food Program Act, which received Royal Assent on March 26, 2026, and committed $216.6 million per year starting in 2029-30 to fund it. The Common Good Party welcomes this as an overdue and meaningful step. A child who is hungry cannot learn. A child who is fed industrial food products instead of real meals is not much better served.

For years, inequality has been growing in our country. Millions of people work hard to provide a good life for themselves and their families. It is they who keep our society running and pay the vast majority of taxes.

Our country deserves a confident policy that prioritizes the wellbeing of its own citizens and is built on a clear understanding that the interests of our larger neighbour is not always the same as ours. Our goal is an independent Canada in a multipolar world — not a junior partner whose resources, data, and decisions are dictated from abroad.
